Pocatello

HistoricDowntownPocetello.png

Historic Downtown Pocatello serves as the architectural and cultural heart of the community, rooted deeply in its origins as a late-19th-century railroad town. Founded in 1882 and named after a Shoshone-Bannock tribal chief, the city officially established its original townsite via an act of Congress in 1888. It quickly earned the nickname "The Gate City" due to its critical geographic importance as a north-south rail junction point for the Utah Northern and Oregon Short Line railroads. Today, the Downtown Historic District spans roughly 18 city blocks and is recognized for its beautifully preserved urban streetscape. The area showcases unique early-20th-century architectural styles—including Gothic Revival, Romanesque Revival, and Art Deco—built predominantly from brick, hand-hewn stone, and terra cotta. Driven by a Business Improvement District (BID) established in 1991, the historic center remains vibrant, blending its well-preserved heritage with modern functionality through a thriving collection of over 200 locally owned small businesses, galleries, and restaurants.
